642 Things to Write About: Dear Henry

Today’s prompt is, “Pick a small object to be given one day to your great-grandchild.  Write a letter to that child explaining why you have chosen this object.”

Dear Henry,

Of all of my great-grandchildren, you are my favorite – just don’t tell anyone I told you that or I’ll rise from my cremated ashes and haunt you for the rest of your life.

For you, my beloved Henry, I have left you something I stumbled upon a long time ago.  I was walking on the beach with your grandpa when I saw it, peeking up out of the sand.  It was a shiny blue stone with smooth edges.  The bright sunlight hid its most interesting characteristic:  it glows.

I held this shiny blue object in one hand and your grandpa’s hand in the other.  Later, after dinner, your grandpa and I sat on the porch swing, admiring it.  Grandpa tried to take it from me to have a closer look, but there was something vulgar about his assumption he could hold it.  I slapped his hand away, hissing and snapping at him like a rattler.

It was then we both knew that shiny blue object claimed me. Owned me. Possessed me.  Your grandfather never again tried to take it away from me.

Now I bequeath it to you, dear Henry.  You, out of all of my wonderful grand-children, are the most possessive.  You are the great-grandchild who never truly learned to share.  So, I’m choosing you to have it. Care for it.  Protect it. Never let anyone else near it.  Remember always, dear Henry, even though I’m dead, I will always be watching you.  Watching you and….MY PRECIOUS!
