A random conversation between my husband and I as we were driving there.
Me: So what river is this along?
Him: The Savannah. When we look across we’ll see South Carolina. But, it’ll probably look just like Georgia.
Me: Well that’s disappointing. I was hoping when I looked across there would be bright, Las Vegas style signs with flashing lights that read: South Carolina Welcomes You! Feel Free to Swim Across!
Him (chuckling): Don’t think we’ll see that today.

When I first learned we were moving to Georgia, I began researching Augusta to find out what attraction we would be near. The Riverwalk was the first thing that popped up. Immediately, I ASSumed that the Augusta Riverwalk would share similarities with the San Antonio Riverwalk. Well, it didn’t. Oops. But that’s okay because the Riverwalk was very pretty and free.
My husband found a parking lot with free two hour parking. “I think this will be fine,” He said. “Two hours should be plenty of time.”
“If not,” I began. “Then we’ll just pull our car into a different parking space and that should reset the clock.”
He laughed. “Honey, it’s Wednesday. The parking lot is half empty. Even if we do run over I don’t think anyone is going to complain.”
Our parking lot was adjacent to this very pretty ramp. It might be hard to tell from the picture but this ramp is actually very steep. Random thought #1 – How in the heck would somebody in a wheel chair get up this ramp? There are no railings. This does not strike me as handicapped accessible.
When we got to the top of the ramp we saw this strange-looking monument with a bunch of plaques below it.
I had no idea what this was. I still don’t. But I figured it was some kind of memorial or the plaques would be commemorative in nature. Not exactly. The plaques were informative. Apparently this strange-looking thing is some kind of weather thingy. Yes, that’s right. I’m calling it a weather thingy.
These were the “commemorative” plaques below it. You know that freaky automated voice that comes on the radio when there’s severe weather. It was blasting from the white weather thingy. I’m sure everyone will be relieved to know that the freaky voice only reported a high of 77 degrees, partly cloudy with a 40% chance of rain.
We continued our walk along the lovely red, brick road (Lions, and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!)
One of several fountains we saw on our way two and from the Riverwalk. Fun fact: purple water was coming out of every fountain we saw. Random Thought #2 What’s with the purple water? Did someone kill the Easter Bunny?
After this fountain we walked toward a very scenic overlook with a whole series of plaques. Random Thought #3 Wow! The city of Augusta sure does love commemorating weather.
A closer look revealed that the weather plaques were in fact actual memorial-type plaques. I was relieved. I think Mother Nature is fascinating but not that fascinating.
Across from Heroes Overlook was a very pretty wall.
The white, horizontal lines caught our attention so we took a closer look.
Oh look at that. Those are flood lines with the dates. Wow! Those flood waters sure did rise high. Random Thought #4- Get the baby swimming lessons!
We continued our walk and came across a small Japanese Garden.
They must be between gardeners.
Next up we saw what appeared to be a very small Ferris wheel. Except it wasn’t.
It was a paddle wheel donated by Nutrasweet! Awe!
Here’s a view of South Carolina across the river. My husband was right. It looks just like Georgia.

Please obtain some large, Las Vegas-style signs to display along the Savannah.

Through out our walk there were various historical signs documenting significant historical things about the area and the Savannah. Other than that, this pretty much sums up what we saw during our walk. However, the same area we were in, also hosts a seasonal Farmer’s Market. That was a lot of fun and worth checking out especially if you buy your veggies in bulk. They have great prices! But, bring cash!
