The Next Big Thing Blog Book Tour!

Welcome to The Next Big Thing!

This is part of an author’s blog tour. Each author who is tagged has the privilege of answering 10 questions about their current work-in-progress. I am honored to have been tagged by Amanda Harms. You can see the link to Amanda’s blog at the end of this post. I’ve tagged another author, Sheri Saluto, who will post her blog on October 17, 2012. (Her blog link is also at the end of this post.) After reading about my “Next Big Thing” be sure to check out the other authors to see what their NEXT BIG THING is.

What is the working title of your book?

The Misadventures of a Disgruntled Psychic

Where did the idea for the book come from?

My interest in psychics and their abilities first started when I was attending the University of New Mexico.  I had readings done by a couple of different psychics and afterwards began wondering who these women were and how they came into their abilities.

What genre does your book fall under?

It’s a Paranormal Comedy but it is also Young Adult Fiction.

What actors would you choose to portray your characters in a movie rendition?

That is an excellent question for which I have absolutely no answer. I haven’t really put that much thought into it.  I guess I’d want new faces with cameo appearances by well-known actors.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Science-minded Amethyst Mueller doesn’t believe in Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, aliens, ghosts and especially psychics; but a sudden and tragic event in her life sends her spiraling into a world where she’s the psychic with gifts she can’t explain and a destiny she doesn’t want.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

I’m leaning toward traditional publishing but I haven’t ruled out any options.

How long did it take you to write the first-draft of your manuscript?

I’m still working on it and have been for about one year.

What other books would you compare to your story within the genre?

As far as comedies go I’d say my story shares similarities with The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It’s a coming-of-age story filled with mostly laughter and a few tears.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

My husband and my mother.  The book began as a series of short stories I wrote and emailed to my husband when he was deployed overseas.  After a while he began asking me questions like “What’s this character’s background?”  and “Can you elaborate more on this?”.  When I told my mother I was sending him these stories she requested I send them to her as well.  After reading a few of them my mother told me I really should consider writing a series of books about these characters.

What else about your book my pique your readers’ interests?

Amethyst is a scientist at heart.  Her beliefs are based on things that can be scientifically proven and have results that can be replicated in a lab.  Finding out she’s a psychic with abilities she can’t explain, test or replicate is a real shock to her system.
