“No!”   Little Thing wagged his finger at Gwennie who stared at him with her usual amount of contempt.

“What do you mean, no?  Don’t tell me, no!  That’s rude!”  She glared at him from the top of her kitty condo, just barely out of his reach.

“What’s going on?”  Little Missy pranced down the stairs into the living room.

“The Little Thing is telling me, ‘no’.”

Little Missy rolled her eyes and yawned.  “Well it’s about time somebody did.”

“Hey!  You be nice to me Little Missy, or I’ll thwap you on the head.”

“No!”  The Little Thing pursed his lips and wagged his finger again.  “No!”

“You be quiet!”  Gwennie snarled.  “I’ve had enough of you.”

“No!”  He wagged his finger at her again.

“Looks like there’s a new sheriff in town.”  Little Missy smiled.  “You better be on your best behavior.”

Gwennie jumped off the kitty condo and ran quickly away from the Little Thing.  “Give me one good reason why.”

“Because Momma and Boy-Dadda like him better than you.”

Gwennie frowned.  “That was hurtful and unnecessary.”

“So is half the stuff that comes out of your mouth.”  Little Missy slapped Gwennie lightly with her tail.

Gwennie ran up the stairs, pouting all the way.  Little Missy turned her attention back to the Little Thing.

“Did you have a good nap?” She asked.

“No!”  He wagged his finger at her.

“I’m sorry. Was your room too hot?”

“No!” He wagged his finger at her again.

Little Missy, uncertain of what else to say, glanced quickly around the room.  Her eyes stopped at the green plastic plate on the coffee table. It was filled with half-eaten animal crackers.

“I see Momma gave you cookies.  Did you like them?”

“No!”  This time the Little Thing shook his head.

“You don’t like cookies anymore?”

“No.”

“What do you like?”

“No.” He shook his head again.

Little Missy slumped down on the ground and scratched her ear with her hind paw.  “Little Thing, do you actually know what ‘no’ means?”

“No.” He shook his head again.

Little Missy nodded.  “Ah!  That’s what I thought.  Well, we’ll make this our little secret.  Gwennie never has to know that you don’t know what it really means.”  She winked at the Little Thing.
